Finding Peace in the Midst of Insomnia and Shock

In this blog we’re tackling insomnia, especially when it’s triggered by shock or disturbing events.  If you’ve been struggling to fall asleep or stay asleep, or if nightmares are keeping you up, this one’s for you.

Let’s dive into some practical tips, breathing methods, and acupressure techniques to help you find peace and ease in your body.

A Listener’s Heartbreaking Story

One of our listeners, who wishes to stay anonymous, shared her heartbreaking story.

Her mother was diagnosed with cancer, and her husband passed away suddenly. It’s hard to imagine the level of shock and devastation this brings. Such events can throw our entire world into chaos, deeply affecting our body and mind.

The Impact of Shock in Chinese Medicine

In both Western and Chinese medicine, shock has profound effects on the body. In Chinese medicine, shock impacts the heart and small intestine, which are linked to our spirit. The heart is seen as the home of our spirit, akin to the fire element, symbolising vitality and energy.

When we experience shock, it can feel like our spirit can’t settle. This restlessness affects our ability to sleep and find peace. But don’t worry, there are ways to help your spirit return home.

Can acupressure be used for insomnia and other sleep disturbances?

Yes, acupressure can be beneficial for various sleep disturbances, including nightmares and general anxiety, by promoting relaxation and improving circulation.

Breathing and Acupressure for Insomnia

Let’s start with a simple yet powerful technique: acupressure combined with box breathing. This method can help you manage insomnia, especially when it’s related to anxiety and shock.

What is the Heart 7 acupressure point and how do I find it?

The Heart 7 acupressure point, also called “Spirit Gate”, is located on the crease of your wrist, in line with your little finger, between the two tendons. It helps nourish the blood, cooling and calming the internal fire. Therefore, it is a very good point for the mind, emotion, and heart-related issues such as stress, anxiety, and insomnia.

Locate the Point: Find Heart 7 by tracing a line from the inside of your little finger down to the crease of your wrist, in between the tendons.

Massage and Press: Gently massage and press this point. It might feel blocked or empty, but aim for a sense of ease and flow. Referring to its name this acupressure point, can help open the gate, relieving any energy blockages in our spirit/mind/emotion.

Is it normal to feel blocked or empty when pressing acupressure points?

Yes, it’s common to feel these sensations. The goal is to massage and press the points until you feel a sense of ease and flow.

How does box breathing help with insomnia?

Box breathing helps by regulating your breath and promoting relaxation, which can calm your mind and help your spirit settle, making it easier to sleep.

Box Breathing:

Inhale: For 4 counts.
Hold: Press the Heart 7 Acupoint and hold your breath for 4 counts.
Exhale: Release for 4 counts.
Hold: Press the Heart 7 Acupoint and hold for 4 counts.

Repeat this process, switching hands to ensure both Heart 7 points are activated. This helps your spirit settle and promotes relaxation.

Finding Comfort in Community

How can visualization help with insomnia?

Visualization can help by creating a comforting mental space, reducing feelings of loneliness and anxiety, which can contribute to better sleep.

So imagine yourself in a comforting space. I often imagine being in a park with lots of other people who are also experiencing

insomnia and we are just hanging out together. This visualisation helps combat the loneliness that can accompany sleepless nights. Knowing you’re not alone can be incredibly soothing.
